WHAT EXACTLY ARE ELECTROLYTES?

Technically, an electrolyte is any substance containing free ions that make the substance electrically conducive. Unfortunately, when you explain it that way it doesn’t help you understand why you need them (or quite frankly, want to ingest them).

BREAKING DOWN THE BASICS...

Electrolytes are a group of minerals (magnesium, sodium, potassium, and calcium) that you need to keep your body functioning. At a cellular level, they help you absorb liquid and keep your muscles functioning. They can be found in more than activity drinks - foods such as potatoes, bananas, citrus fruits, and beef are good sources of electrolytes.

This may sound like a minor point of biology, but without a proper electrolyte balance people can become dehydrated or even experience hyponatremia, which is associated with things like congestive heart failure and pneumonia.

When you sweat, you sweat out electrolytes. While water will help rehydrate you, you need a drink that has electrolytes to keep your body fully functioning. If you exercise regularly without replacing electrolytes, you may find yourself experience strange symptoms during your workouts.

If you work in a high-heat environment, electrolytes are even more important. Without them, you may find yourself dizzy or unable to concentrate on the task at hand. Make sure that when you’re sweating, you’re hydrating with a drink that replaces the electrolytes in your body as well as the liquid. It will make you happier and healthier in the long term, and your body will function better.
